Comparing options

The two project management software providers both offer a range of tiered plans that start with a basic free plan and then build in the number of features and functionality they have through to an Enterprise plan. Monday.com offers five tiers that comprise of a free plan and four paid plans that include an Enterprise plan. Trello offers four tiers that consist of a free plan and three paid plans which include an enterprise plan that can be tailored to your business’ needs and caters for large numbers of users of 5,000 or more.

Below are the details about the different tiers of plans that are available from the two providers.

Free

Monday.com offers a free plan that is designed for individuals and the plan is called Individual. The plan allows up to two seats/users and enables them to keep track of their work and share that work with the other user. The features included in the plan are unlimited documents and boards, access to over 200 templates, allowance of over 20 column types, and the ability to access the software from anywhere on any device using their mobile apps available on iOS and Android.

Monday.com features

Trello offers a free plan that is called Free that is designed for individuals and teams and the only restrictions are that it includes up to 10 boards per Workspace, a maximum individual file size of 10MB and 250 Workspace command runs per month. The features included are more limited than the other plans but include unlimited cards, power-ups, storage and activity logs, as well as integration with over 200 apps/tools, customisable backgrounds and stickers, assignee and due dates, 2-factor authentication, and mobile app available on iOS and Android.

Low level plan

Monday.com offers a low level paid plan called Basic which is designed to manage team tasks and simple projects. It includes the features in the Free plan plus unlimited projects, items, sub-items, shareable forms and free viewers, and it provides full API access, file management and Kanban view.

Trello’s low level paid plan is called Standard and is designed for those that need to manage more work and require scalable collaboration. The plan includes all the Free plan features plus unlimited boards and storage with a maximum individual file size of 250MB, and an allowance to run 1,000 Workspace commands per month. Other features include advanced checklists, customisable fields, single board guests and saved searches.

Mid-level plan

Monday.com offers a mid-level paid plan that is called Standard that gives users the ability to plan and track projects and tasks with visual tools and automation. It includes the features in the Basic plan above plus a range of more advanced project management features including guest access, simple project portfolio management, filters, calendar view, custom notifications and reminders, Gantt charts, basic analytics and reporting dashboards. The software provides integration with two-way email with Gmail and Outlook, and can sync calendars with Google and Outlook, and it offers up to 250 automation actions per month and up to 250 integration actions per month.

Trello does not offer a mid-level plan between their Standard and Premium plans.

High level plan

Monday.com offers a high level paid plan that is called Pro that is capable of managing projects and processes from A-Z with powerful analytical tools and automation. The plan includes all the features in the Standard plan above plus enhanced project management capabilities. These features include unlimited boards, advanced permissions, task and project dependencies, allocation and management of resources, time tracking, milestones management, advanced formula capabilities, advanced portfolio management, and reporting and analytics dashboards. The software can also integrate with Slack, Microsoft Teams and Todoist, and perform up to 25,000 automation actions per month and up to 25,000 integrations actions per month.

Trello offers a high level paid plan that is called Premium that is suitable for teams up to 100 and can manage multiple projects. The plan includes all the features in their Standard plan plus a range of advanced project management capabilities. These features include dashboard view, timeline view, Workspace view, Table view, calendar view, Workspace calendar view, a map view, collections, and observers. Other functionality and support include unlimited Workspace command runs, admin and security features, Workspace-level templates, priority support, Google Apps sign-on and simple data export.

Enterprise plan

Monday.com also offers an enterprise plan that is called Enterprise that delivers enterprise-grade business workflows and analytics plus unlimited Premium support. This plan includes all the features in the Pro plan plus tailored onboarding, multi-level permissions, enterprise-scale automation and integrations, work performance insights, and enterprise-grade security and governance. With this plan, you also get Premium support, advanced reporting and analytics, advanced integrations with the Jira server, Salesforce and others.

Trello also offers an enterprise plan that is called the Enterprise plan that is designed for organisations that require more security and controls from their project management software. The plan includes all the features in the Premium plan plus unlimited Workspaces, organisation wide permissions, organisation visible boards, public board management, multi-board guests, attachment permissions, power-up administration and Atlassian Access for free SSO and user provisioning. The pricing for this plan is based on the number of users and the price per user decreases when you have more users. The plan is suitable for up to 5,000 users and can accommodate more if you contact their sales team to discuss your needs and they will give you a bespoke price.

Pricing

Both Monday.com and Trello provide pricing structures that are tiered and offer an increasing number of product features as the plan costs increase in value. Monday.com offers five tiers of plans from a free plan through to an Enterprise plan where the price is only available through the sales team. Trello offers four tiers of plans comprising of a free plan and three plans which include an Enterprise plan that the price is based on the number of users you have. The pricing between the two providers is in different currencies but is also not comparable as Trello offers a much lower price per user.

Monday.com offers five tiers of pricing which are:

  • Individual – is free and is for up to 2 users
  • Basic – £7 per user per month
  • Standard – £9 per user per month
  • Pro – £14 per user per month
  • Enterprise – customised pricing, contact them for a quote

Trello offers a choice of four work management plans:

  • Free – $0 suitable for individuals or teams
  • Standard – $5 per user per month
  • Premium – $10 per user per month
  • Enterprise – $7.38-17.50 per user per month – Figures apply to users between 25 and 5,000 and the cost per user decreases with the number of users you have. Bespoke quotes are available from the sales team for those with more than 5,000 users.

They offer discounts to non-profit community organisations and educational establishments.

Customer reviews

Finding out what the company’s customers, past and present, think about the service provided to them and the products is a great way of discovering what it might be like to be one of their customers. It is especially useful in understanding the customer support provision and how good the service is.

Monday.com had a high number of customer reviews at the time of writing this comparison piece but they were all on one review site, Trustpilot. There were 2,885 customers reviews on Trustpilot which had very mixed customer ratings, however, the overall customer rating was poor due to a spate of negative reviews which impacted the overall score bring it down. The breakdown of the customer reviews was 77% of reviewers rated them as excellent and only 18% rated them as poor. The negative review comments were regarding the poor customer support and their chat function not working properly. The positive review comments included feedback about the platform being easy to use, good for organising and planning tasks, providing useful collaboration tools, offering effective automation, and good that it can be combined with their CRM software.

Trello also only featured on one of the leading customer review sites that we explored at the time the comparison was written and this was Trustpilot. There were only 122 customer reviews on Trustpilot, and they received an overall rating of excellent as 68% of reviewers scored them as excellent and 26% scored them as great. The comments from reviewers were largely positive and included a great free plan, flexible software, easy to use, good third-party integrations, great at organising workflow and tasks, and a useful app.

Try before you buy

Monday.com offers a free trial of their project management software but they do not state how long the trial period lasts. The trial is a good opportunity to explore the software and its features before purchasing it. You can set up a free trial on their website or by contacting their sales team through their enquiry form. They also offer a free plan that can be used by up to two people which you could take advantage of to sample their software before purchasing a plan, however, the plan will not have all the features included in the paid plans as it is a basic plan.

Trello offers a free plan that you can use for as long as you like and is suitable for individuals and teams and has no limit on the number of users, however, the functionality is the most basic level and therefore not all features will be included. They also offer a free trial on their Premium plan but not on their other plans. This will give you greater insight into all the features available to paid customers, but you will need to be aware of which features are included in the plan you select if you choose a different plan to the Premium plan.
